Crystallized
Maya, Blender, Trnio & Mixamo, 2021
I find the traditional view of a prosthetic being a replacement for a limb to be rather intuitive and self-evident. Of course, functionality is it's primal goal but I can't help but feel it can be more than its intended use. How can one stretch the definition of “prosthetic” further? How can you transform its gaze of functionality to a gaze of beauty?
Heavily inspired by The Alternative Limb Project, the Spike Leg of Project Viktoria Modesta, I fancied the aesthetic of the spike and wanted to incorporate it in a similar fashion being closely resembled as a crystal.
Crystallized is a prosthetic that transforms the physical body to a redesign of the solid form of one’s skin. Crystallization is scientifically defined as the “formation of a solid phase of a chemical compound from a solution in which that compound is dissolved.” This prosthetic dissolves and dematerializes its user in order to bridge the physical and the spiritual through revitalization. Crystallized bends the universal definition of a “prosthetic” by twisting its defined properties to restore human function into a destructive cleansing of one’s self. It combines amputees’ untapped potential beauty and the dark pity put onto them into a combined dissolved embodiment of crystallization.
